Course Description:
Material classification. Crystal structure of materials. Defects of the crystal structure. Basic physical properties of metals. Mechanical properties and testing of metals. Surface uniformity. Friction-Wear. Corrosion, oxidation and protection of metals. Phase diagrams (binary and tertiary phase diagrams). Study of Fe-C phase diagram. Solid state structure transformations. Hardening methods for metals. Surface hardening processes of metals (mechanical, thermal and thermochemical processes). Industrial alloys (steels, cast iron, copper alloys, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, titanium alloys, superalloys).

Laboratory exercises:
1. Structure characterization of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
2. Heat treatment of steels.
3. Mechanical behavior and properties of materials.
